Sommelier & Spirits Manager

Lakewood Country Club seeks an organized and polished service industry professional for the role of Sommelier & Spirits Manager.  This position encompasses all aspects of liquor, beer and wine programs throughout the Club including pricing, menus and training.  This role requires a high level of autonomy and the ability to manage time and tasks well without supervision.  While daily responsibilities include coverage for all dining room outlets, the focus of the Sommelier & Spirits Manager is to maintain modern and relevant beverage programs across all Club outlets including a large Wine Locker Membership.  This is an outstanding opportunity for a responsible individual to grow in a Club environment with a dynamic team of seasoned industry professionals.  Working alongside the Service Director and Director of Events, the Sommelier & Spirits Manager will help lead the service staff into a new era for Lakewood Country Club emphasizing an outstanding Member experience. 

Reports to: Food & Beverage Director

Education and/or Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in business, hospitality management, or related field desirable.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in the food service business.
  • Certification from a regulating wine institution (CMS or WSET).

Job Summary

Working closely with the Service Director and Food & Beverage Director, the Sommelier & Spirits Manager is responsible for the management of the Club’s Member Service and overall Beverage Operation.  Develops and maintains a well-rounded wine and beverage program that is commensurate with the culture and expectations of Lakewood’s Membership. This includes, but is not limited to, primarily service in the Men’s Card Room, Ladies’ Card Room, Grill, Garden Room, Garden Terrace, Pavilion & Leisure Bars and Bar Lounge.

Job Tasks/Duties

  • Develops and maintains a bar product and supplies inventory system for alcoholic beverages including wine, spirits, beer, non-alcoholic beverages and mixers, glassware, and paper and other bar supplies.
  • Plans promotional strategies and materials; develops recipes to improve the beverage program for Members and Guests.
  • Develops standard operating procedures to help assure that bars are set-up and operated to ensure efficient beverage service in all the Club’s outlets and for special functions.
  • Manage the Wine Program to include Wine Lockers, Wine by glass, Wine List and Wine Events.
  • Plans Special Wine Events for Members.
  • Executes an accurate and timely inventory of all LBW in all outlets of the Club. 
  • Schedules wine and beer samplings with distributors to continuously improve variety and quality of beverages available to Club Members and Guests.
  • Assists with the management of Club functions and private special events.
  • Performs the duties of MOD/closing manager and performs P.O.S. end of day functions as needed.
  • Attends Food and Beverage and Department Head meetings as scheduled.
  • Participates in the food and beverage budgeting process.
  • Monitors the budget and directs corrective action procedures as necessary to help assure that budget goals are attained.
  • Monitors internal cost control procedures and performs inventories of plate wares, glass and silver.
  • Assists in maintaining the Club’s Point of Sale system and updating menu items and pricing.
  • Plans and coordinates weekly training and professional development programs for service staff.
  • Maintains contact with Members and helps to assure maximum Member satisfaction.
  • Participates in on-going facility inspections throughout the Club to assure that cleanliness, safety and other standards are consistently attained.
  • Interacts with Members by answering questions, solving problems, overseeing services and cleanliness and showing the Club facilities to visitors.
  • Assures that state and local laws and the Club’s policies and procedures for the service of alcoholic beverages are consistently followed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, stand, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Moderate noise level in the work environment.
  • Must be able to handle hot and cold interior and outdoor conditions.
