The Phoenix Hotel

The Phoenix Hotel is a Tenderloin cultural icon and a longtime favorite of the rock ‘n’ roll set. Sitting at the intersection of the Tenderloin, Civic Center, and Little Saigon districts, the Phoenix is an oasis amid the grit of downtown San Francisco. Once a 1950s-era motor court, the hotel was one of the few spots in town that could accommodate a tour bus—meaning that it was the stopover for anyone passing through SF’s legendary live music venues. With lore ranging from Neil Young’s extended stay with his bushbabies to the note on Phoenix stationery found in Kurt Cobain’s pocket after his death, it’s more than solidifying its place as a cornerstone of the city’s storied musical past. Featuring one of two pools with historic landmark status, the spirit of the Phoenix is one of intrepid excess, ingenuity in the hopes of having a good time.
