Under the direction of the Safety Manager, the Safety Supervisor is responsible for the safety of Yaamava’ Resort & Casino at San Manuel property. This role is also responsible for the safety for all team members, guests, and the public while onsite including events and activities. The Safety Supervisor evaluates investigation data and reports and escalates concerns, as needed. The Safety Supervisor supports all property environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs and assures compliance with Tribal, Federal, State, and Local regulations by team members, vendors, and contractors. This role also works closely with all levels of leadership to assure policies and programs are effectively developed, implemented, communicated, and supported throughout the property. In addition, the Safety Supervisor provides day-to-day guidance and support to the safety team members responsible for Yaamava’ Resort & Casino.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Oversees and reviews the investigations and inspection of work with responsible department(s) and Safety Specialists to resolve safety matters including those reported by the Hazardous Condition Reports. Assembles and analyzes compliance, safety performance statistics (leading and lagging), and accident trend data to develop and implement initiatives that drive improvement.

2. Evaluates all equipment standards of practice (SOPs) to ensure the applicable safety measures are addressed.  Supervises all environmental, health, and safety checks performed by the team including inspecting job walks involving electrical and equipment installations, and pool chemicals to ensure that all enterprise risk management requirements are met.

3. Monitors the effectiveness of electrical, fire, and pool inspections by developing and submitting reports of trends, frequencies, and other tracking data. Executes the enforcement and defines opportunities for improvement to ensure exemplary regulatory performance to comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), regulatory agencies, and enterprise guidelines. 

4. Oversees new employee safety orientation, provides training for new Safety Specialists, and conducts property operational safety training. Ensures tactical alignment across all departments on the property.  Establishes the expectation for safety team members to anticipate and escalate concerns when strict standards for safety are in danger of being compromised.

5. Works with the responsible department(s) to resolve Hazardous Condition Reports, as well as all other health and safety hazards, which pose an immediate threat to team members, patrons, equipment, or buildings.  Responds to health and safety questions, concerns and inquiries. 

6. Manages EHS projects that help produce continuous measurable improvements.  Develops inspection checklists and utilizes apps and centralized platforms to track inspection results, and safety performance data. Utilizes the findings from data collection to update departments and assist departments with EHS action plans to improve safety performance property wide.

7. Conducts fire and emergency drills, monitors checks of the eye wash stations, fire extinguishers, program implementations, and other required EHS checks deemed necessary by the enterprise risk management EHS team to ensure compliance.

8. Attends and monitors monthly departmental safety committee meetings, to provide additional EHS resources. Maintains recordkeeping requirements in accordance with the Gaming Commission and OSHA to ensure compliance and produce records upon request based on agency requested timeframes.

9. Reviews suggestions referred and reviewed by Safety Specialists that are submitted by employees pertaining to safety and safety devices, makes recommendations to department management for adoption when applicable.

10. Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficiency of the department.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.   Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning reviewing and directing work; evaluating and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.  Makes hiring decisions and designs individual development plans with succession planning in mind for all key roles.

Education/Experience/Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Risk Management, or closely related field is required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years directly related experience in the field of environmental, health and safety is required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years supervisory experience in the field of environmental, health and safety is preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and progressive, relevant, and direct experience may be considered in lieu of minimum educational/experience requirement indicated above.
  • Must possess intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and internet research methodology.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with safety program management and OSHA regulatory requirements for general industry.
  • Knowledge of safe work behaviors, interpretation of safety data and demonstrated ability to evaluate safety risks
  • Able to clearly present information through the written reports and presentations.
  • Possess excellent and visible organizational skills and demonstrate the ability to work on multiple projects in an effective manner and under deadline pressure.
  • Demonstrated maturity and poise; ability to employ perfect discretion in sensitive situations.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately. 
  • Must have the ability to lead process improvement initiatives in a team environment.
  • Must be able to work effectively with diverse populations.     
  • Must be able to meet absolute deadlines.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations

  • At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission, you may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license.
  • A qualified candidate/employee must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the company’s insurance carrier.
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 30 hr. certificate required or must have the ability to obtain certificate within one year.
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional® (CSP), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Safe Quality Food (SQF), or equivalent professional designation preferred and/or must have the ability to obtain relevant professional designation within one year.
  • Must obtain and maintain current ServSafe certificate.
